How would you define an idol?
Some think statutes, some visualize some kind of invisible god. Many psychologist say it’s anything you worship - your body, lust, insecurity, food, booze, drugs, children, success, relationships, affirmation, busyness - and the list goes on.
Are you familiar with Elijah’s challenge to the idol worshippers of the day?
There were hundreds of Baal religious leaders. Elijah challenged them with a sacrifice of a bull on two alters. Elijah’s alter vs theirs. The challenge was to ask God to burn Elijah’s sacrifice. They prayed to their Baal God.
The Baal God did not answer the leaders and “At noon Elijah began to make fun of them. “Pray louder!” he said. “If Baal really is a god, maybe he is thinking, or busy, or traveling! Maybe he is sleeping so you will have to wake him!” (1 Kings 18:27 NCV)
“The prophets prayed louder, cutting themselves with swords and spears until their blood flowed, which was the way they worshiped. The afternoon passed, and the prophets continued to act like this until it was time for the evening sacrifice. But no voice was heard; Baal did not answer, and no one paid attention.” (1 Kings 18:28, 29 NCV)
Then Elijah prayed to God Almighty after soaking his sacrifice and filling his ditch around it with water - three times. God answered Elijah’s prayer and burned it all - including the stones.
So what’s the point?
I don’t want to keep bringing up my leukemia, however, if we are not careful, we will build our alters so easily. For example, I could build an alter of clean food, physicians, miracle remedies and panic and counting only on the docs.
Instead, I’ll do my due diligence, however it will be built on the foundation of my God. He will bless my homework, the physicians - or - He may just show up and heal me without any outside source.
Either way, I will call only on Him regularly and prioritize Him in my life - especially now.
Do you have idols? An idol is what we talk about, spend time, energy and money on. It’s the thing we feel we can’t live without.
An there is nothing like trusting, depending upon and really beleiving that God hears us, knows us and loves us. He loved us so much He gave us Jesus. He won’t abandon you when you call on Him.
Idols are silent and will fail you.
Sometimes God gives you exactly what you want. Sometimes, He has a better plan. You can trust Him.
LORD, may I never build an idol. If I do, you will just tear it down. Help me trust you and believe. I beleive. But help me beleive more. IJNIP amen ♥️
