The Difference Between Two Men - Which One Would You Choose?

“People want others to be loyal, so it is better to be poor than to be a liar.” (Proverbs 19:22, NCV)

Huh? This proverb almost makes your brain stop for a second. What does being poor have to do with lying? And what does it have to do with being loyal?

First, remember who wrote it—Solomon. He was a deep thinker, and Proverbs often teaches through contrast.

WHICH MAN WOULD YOU DESIRE?

He’s saying people long for character, loyalty, faithfulness, and genuine love. Yet many spend their lives chasing something entirely different: wealth, status, the bigger house, the nicer car, influence, and success. Along the way, some exaggerate, break promises, cheat people, or become someone who simply can’t be trusted.

Now picture another man. He lives paycheck to paycheck. He drives an old pickup. He keeps his word. He’s faithful to his wife. He pays his debts. If he says he’ll be there at 8:00, he’s there.

Now ask yourself a few questions. Which man would you rather have marry your daughter? Which one would you trust with your wallet? Which one would you choose as your business partner?

Most of us wouldn’t hesitate. We’d choose the poor man every time.

SO WHAT’S THE POINT?

The world chases something different than God. I want this to make me stop and ask - “What am I chasing?” I hope it’s what God desires. What is that? God admires integrity, loyalty, honesty and faithfulness.

I hope I’m remembered as a man who kept his word, loved God, loved people, and could be counted on. In the end, that’s the kind of wealth that really matters.

LORD, thank You for this strange little proverb. Help me pursue integrity more than success, faithfulness more than fame, and character more than comfort. Make me the kind of man you can trust with whatever you place in my hands. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen. ♥️
