Sin and Good Deeds - How Visible Are They?
What sins and lifestyle habits are you hiding? What are you doing that you wouldn’t want others to know about?
And on the other side, what good deeds are you doing that nobody sees?
Some sins and unhealthy habits are easy to recognize. Overeating can show up in our weight. Drunkenness is often obvious. Laziness shows up when responsibilities go undone. But other sins can remain hidden, sometimes for years.
Today, I read something interesting from Paul:
“The sins of some people are easy to see even before they are judged, but the sins of others are seen only later. So also good deeds are easy to see, but even those that are not easily seen cannot stay hidden.” (1 Timothy 5:24–25 NCV)
Think about that. Some sins are obvious. Others are hidden. But none are hidden from God.
SOME HIDDEN SINS
Lustful thoughts, lying, gossip, hidden affairs, pornography, addictions, bitterness, and jealousy can all live beneath the surface. Others may never know. But we know. And God knows.
Why bring this up? Because hidden sin and destructive lifestyle habits can slowly ruin our lives, relationships, and fellowship with God.
HOW TO OVER COME THINGS WE HIDE
So here’s a question: Is something you’re hiding slowly destroying something you love? If so, why are you continuing?
God gives us a way out. Confess it. Repent of it. Seek forgiveness. Repentance means turning away from sin and changing direction.
Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Then why don’t we do it?
Perhaps because we love what we’re doing more than we’re willing to admit. We want forgiveness without surrender, peace without change, and God without giving up our hidden pleasures.
WHAT ABOUT GOOD DEEDS?
Now consider the other side of Paul’s message. Good deeds can also be visible or hidden.
Some people do good and make sure everyone knows. Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, they already have their full reward.” (Matthew 6:2 NCV)
But others give generously, help quietly, and serve without seeking recognition. Jesus taught that God sees those secret acts of kindness and rewards them (Matthew 6:4).
Isn’t that interesting? God sees both our hidden sins and our hidden goodness.
WHY WE LIVE THIS WAY
I think it comes down to something I’ve said many times: What do you love?
We nurture what we love. We serve what we love. We spend time on what we love. Ultimately, we worship what we love.
So, do you love those hidden sins or habits more than God? Do you love yourself more than others?
CONCLUSION
I ask myself these questions, too.
Here’s my takeaway: What we do when nobody is watching reveals a great deal about who we really are.
Maybe today is the day to bring something hidden into the light.
Confess. Repent. Seek forgiveness. And do good, even when nobody is watching.
GOD, it may sound scary, but please reveal what needs to change in my life. Give me courage to confess, repent, and seek forgiveness. Help me love You more than anything I might be hiding, and teach me to do good without seeking recognition. I want to live an honest, pure life, and actually do what Christ does. Please help me. IJNIP amen ♥️
