He Had Everything - Until He Lost It All
HE HAD EVERYTHING — UNTIL HE LOST IT ALL
An imaginary story based on Lamentations 1
There was once a man named Jonathan. He had everything most people dream of having—a beautiful family, a successful business, money, influence, and friends who admired him. He was respected in his community and involved in his church.
THE EROSION
But slowly, something changed. Jonathan began making small compromises. He chased money more than God, neglected his family, and surrounded himself with people who told him what he wanted to hear. At first, life seemed great. His business grew, his wealth increased, and people continued admiring him. But spiritually, Jonathan was falling apart.
His wife pleaded with him to change. His friends warned him. But he wouldn’t listen. He thought he was too successful to fail. Then everything began unraveling. His marriage collapsed, his children became distant, his business suffered, and the friends he thought would always be there disappeared.
CRASH AND BURN
Suddenly, Jonathan found himself alone. Sitting in his beautiful home, surrounded by things that once made him feel important, he remembered the life he used to have. The laughter, the peace, and his relationship with God. And he began to cry.
FACING THE TRUTH
For the first time, Jonathan stopped blaming others and admitted the truth. He had ignored God’s warnings, trusted the wrong people, and traded what mattered most for things that couldn’t satisfy him. Now, broken, he cried out to God for mercy.
This Is the Story of Lamentations 1
WHAT IS LAMENTATIONS ABOUT?
Jerusalem was once a magnificent city filled with people, prosperity, and worship. But God’s people repeatedly turned away from Him, worshiped false gods, and ignored His warnings. Eventually, Babylon destroyed Jerusalem in 586 BC.
Lamentations 1:1 describes a once-crowded city now sitting lonely. Just like Jonathan, Jerusalem had lost its former glory. In verse 8, we learn that Jerusalem had sinned greatly. And in verse 18, Jerusalem acknowledges that God was right and that His commands had been rejected.
Lamentations is real. Jeremiah saw his people die in horrible ways. It’s about a city, but it might as well be a person, because a city is just a lot people gone bad.
WHAT REALLY HAPPENED
First, success doesn’t always mean you’re right with God. You can be prospering outwardly while falling apart spiritually. Sometimes comfort and success give us a false sense of security, causing us to think we don’t need God.
Second, small compromises can lead to devastating consequences. Destruction often begins long before we recognize it. One bad decision leads to another, and before long, we find ourselves somewhere we never intended to be.
Third, be careful who you trust and who influences you. Not everyone celebrating with you will stand beside you when life falls apart. Surround yourself with people who love you enough to tell you the truth.
Fourth, don’t mistake God’s patience for His approval. Just because consequences haven’t arrived doesn’t mean your choices are right. God may be giving you time to recognize your mistakes and turn back to Him.
Finally, it’s never too late to turn your heart toward God. Although consequences may remain, His mercy is still worth seeking. Lamentations 3:22–23 reminds us that God’s mercies are new every morning.
CONCLUSION
So, here’s the reality question: Am I becoming more like Christ, or am I slowly becoming someone I never intended to be? This was me at one time.
Most people don’t destroy their lives overnight. It happens one compromise, one excuse, and one bad decision at a time. And perhaps the greatest tragedy isn’t losing everything. It’s gaining everything the world offers while slowly losing your relationship with God.
GOD, open my eyes to the compromises I’m making. Give me the humility to listen when You correct me, the courage to change, and the wisdom to keep You first in everything I do. IJNIP amen ♥️
