Why do you speak up and share? Is your motive to show your intelligence? Are your words spoken to minister to others or promote your own agenda?
I am the pot calling the kettle black here. I’m quite the talker. And talking too much is not good.
King Solomon said “The wise say very little, and those with understanding stay calm. Even fools seem to be wise if they keep quiet; if they don’t speak, they appear to understand.” (Proverbs 17:27-28 NCV)
I remember one time my Dad had people over for his annual Christmas breakfast. I thought I was working the crowd and talking to everyone quite well. My brother Ralph, much quieter, kindly smiled, greeted and spoke when spoken too.
Thinking I had slayed the group and impressed everyone, I overheard two sweet ladies say “That Ralph is such a nice young man isn’t he?” HA - I thought “What about me?!”
To this day, he speaks wisely with few words. Thanks for the good model Ralph ♥️.
I think people who love deeply, and forgive easily, are slow to anger - and they say very little. And when they do speak, it’s positive, complimentary and kind.
Many times, angry people speak a lot and find unkind things to say. Many gossip in attempts to murder the reputation of others. It’s sad - and foolish.
Some talkers love the attention and accolades, so they talk a lot. It’s interesting that Solomon said, even a foolish person who keeps quiet appears as if they understand.
I do believe in standing up and speaking up. We should speak for those who can’t defend themselves. We should pray and speak to those who need to be loved and lifted up. And we should be kind, inspiring and pray with those in trouble.
And occasionally, we should talk about things that matter. Too many conversations are about nothing, and things that don’t have much depth.
When’s the last time you called someone just to compliment, appreciate and say you love and miss them? No, every conversation doesn’t have to be serious and heartfelt. However there is time to share meaningful words.
LORD, help us control our tongue and heart. May we speak in love, true love, as you have spoken to us in your word. IJNIP amen ♥️
