Why Do I Keep Getting Beat By This - I just can’t do it

What in your life keeps beating you, the thing you just can’t seem to beat?

Maybe it’s your weight, drinking, unhealthy eating, pornography, overspending, anger, a toxic relationship, or another habit you keep promising yourself you’ll change. Why does it keep winning?

Sometimes it’s because the battle is bigger than willpower alone. But sometimes, if we’re honest, it’s because we simply aren’t trying hard enough. Are we really doing everything we can, or are we settling?

I want to point out two things today about success and failure.

The first is what I call the “Miserable Middle.” You’re not strong enough to win, but you’re not weak enough to lose. You’re simply stuck. Your health isn’t falling apart, but it isn’t thriving. Your marriage isn’t over, but it isn’t flourishing. Your finances aren’t a disaster, but they’re not honoring God either. Even your walk with Him has become comfortable instead of growing.

It’s a miserable place to live, yet far too many people stay there because it’s comfortable. Comfort can become one of our greatest enemies. It keeps us from changing. What a frustrating place to live.

The second thing I want to point out is this, “Self-destruction”. You’re trying, but you keep getting beat by yourself.

Before we go any further, I want you to hear something that may be difficult to believe. If you belong to Christ, there is no condemnation waiting for you. God isn’t standing over you with disappointment and disgust. He is inviting you to come to Him.

“So now, those who are in Christ Jesus are not judged guilty.” (Romans 8:1, NCV) You are not a bad person in the eyes of God. You are savable and He wants to rescue you. Man, I know that sounds churchy. But stay with me please.

But before you can experience the freedom Christ offers, you first have to become convinced that Jesus is who He claimed to be. If you’re skeptical, don’t ignore Him, investigate Him. Read the Gospels. Get some help from someone who knows. Examine the evidence. Ask the hard questions. Ask God to reveal the truth to you.

Jesus never asked people to believe blindly. He invited them to look at His life, His teachings, His miracles, His death, and His resurrection. Christianity stands or falls on the person of Christ. And only there is where you and I truly succeed.

If He truly is the Son of God, then He alone has the power to do what no one else can.

You simply don’t have enough gas in your tank to overcome it. Why? What’s wrong? Why can’t you win?

Sometimes you’ve spent so much time swimming in the pool of defeat that you’ve forgotten what victory even looks like. You think more about your failures than about what it will take to overcome them. And if I could be so bold, you’re trying to win in your own strength. The problem is, you only have so much strength.

Sometimes you simply can’t forgive. Sometimes you can’t stop the negative thoughts. Sometimes you can’t silence the shame. Sometimes you are your own worst enemy.

Truth is, and I know this is going to sound churchy again, you simply need Jesus. You need the power of the Holy Spirit. You need God to intervene.

How? By giving you strength when you have none, healing your heart, renewing your mind, changing your desires, and making you into a new person from the inside out.

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” (Romans 12:2, NCV)

“Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17, NCV)

The reason this thing keeps winning may be because you keep trying to beat it with the same stick. One more promise. One more strategy. One more burst of motivation. Sometimes those things help, and wise counsel is a gift from God. “Without good advice, everything goes wrong—it takes careful planning for things to go well.” (Proverbs 15:22, NCV).

But even the best counselor cannot do what only God can do. A therapist may help you understand your wounds. Jesus can heal them. A counselor may help you develop healthier patterns. The Holy Spirit changes hearts.

The biggest obstacle for many people isn’t that Christ can’t heal them. It’s that they don’t believe He will. They don’t believe He’s real, that He cares, or that He can actually transform them.

That takes faith, but biblical faith isn’t wishful thinking. It’s trusting someone because you’ve become convinced He is trustworthy.

“Faith means being sure of the things we hope for and knowing that something is real even if we do not see it.” (Hebrews 11:1, NCV)

You can’t see God. You can’t see Jesus. You can’t see the Holy Spirit. But that doesn’t make them any less real. God works where no one else can—deep inside the heart, the mind, the conscience, and the soul. He repairs what sin has broken. He heals what shame has wounded. He sets your life on an entirely new trajectory. It’s difficult to explain until you’ve experienced it yourself.

So how do you begin? Ask.

Ask God to reveal Himself. Ask Jesus to become more than just a historical figure. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you eyes to see what you’ve never seen and ears to hear what you’ve never understood.

Jesus made an incredible promise: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7, NCV)

Then be transparent. Come clean. Admit the struggle. Find mature believers who will walk beside you.

No mountain climber climbs Everest alone. The wise ones tie themselves to others so everyone reaches the summit together.

“Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so God can heal you.” (James 5:16, NCV)

“Two people are better than one… If one falls, the other can help him up.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10, NCV)

Here’s another truth. Most people don’t change until they’re sufficiently disturbed by where they are. One day you’ll become sick and tired of being sick and tired. My question is…why wait?

Why fight this battle another day by yourself? Don’t do what I did and fight for too many years. Too many give up during the hard journey. You don’t want to be that person.

Instead, reach out to a pastor. Reach out to a trusted Christian friend. Reach out to me. Reach out to somebody who will lovingly point you toward Christ.

But you’ll have to put down your independent pride. You’ll have to admit you need help. That’s not weakness. That’s where real strength begins.

Jesus said, “I have come so they can have life. I want them to have it in the fullest possible way.” (John 10:10, NCV)

Don’t settle for the Miserable Middle when Christ is offering abundant life.

LORD, I pray for the person reading this today. If they aren’t convinced that Jesus is who He claimed to be, give them the courage to honestly seek You. Reveal Yourself through Your Word, through Your Spirit, and through the people You place in their lives. Replace doubt with truth, shame with grace, and fear with faith. Give them strength where they have none, hope where they have lost it, and the courage to surrender what they’ve been trying to carry alone. Transform them from the inside out. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen. ❤️
