The Illusion Of Control

How much control do you really have? What circumstances do you actually control?
King Solomon once said:
“People may make plans in their minds, but the Lord decides what they will do.” (Proverbs 16:9 NCV)
That verse hits hard—because it’s true.
You can strategize, map out your life, and think you’re steering the ship. But just one phone call, one diagnosis, one betrayal, or one pink slip can change everything.
Suddenly, your carefully designed plan is in pieces.
Maybe you thought you’d grow old with your spouse, but they walked away.
Maybe you planned to retire comfortably, but your health had other plans.
Maybe you built a business from the ground up—only to watch it crash in an unexpected season.
The truth is, God is the One orchestrating everything.
Even when it feels random or cruel, the Bible reminds us that He is not absent. He is not surprised. And He is never out of control.
“We may make our plans, but God has the last word.” (Proverbs 16:1 NCV)
That’s not meant to discourage, it’s meant to comfort. Because if God is the One calling the shots, that means it’s not up to you to carry the weight of the world.
It’s not up to you to understand everything that happens. You don’t need to see the plan to trust the Planner.
“The Lord makes everything happen for his own reasons…” (Proverbs 16:4a NCV)
Sometimes God redirects your steps, not because He’s punishing you, but because He sees what you can’t. He protects you from unseen danger, grows you through hardship, and uses even the detours to bring about His divine purpose.
Even hardship is not wasted in His hands.
“You, Lord, give true peace to those who depend on you, because they trust you.” (Isaiah 26:3 NCV)
So take heart. The chaos around you is not the final word. The lost job, the unexpected illness, the broken relationship - they aren’t the end of your story.
Pray. Ask God for discernment. Walk close to Him - it’s the safest place. Get Godly advice - don’t do it alone. God will answer. He will help you.
God is still writing. He is still in control. And He is the One calling the shots. Let go of the illusion of control, and grab hold of the One who never loses it.
LORD, if it’s chaos, it’s not from you. However, you can use it to help us, mold us and teach us. All things really do work for good for those who love and trust you. Help us love and trust you with everything. IJNIP amen ♥️
