How would you describe Jesus Christ?
What did He look like? What was His personality like? How did He think? What did He think of you? Of me?
What was His view of God, His Father? Of religious leaders? The government? The rich? The poor? The sinner?
You don’t have to guess. The answers are right there in Scripture—in His words, His actions, His miracles, and His mercy.
In the people He welcomed, healed, fed, forgave, and ultimately died for. He spoke plainly. He lived purely. He gave completely.
But what did Jesus look like?
Truth is, no one knows for sure. No physical description is recorded in the New Testament.
But over on the Patheos blog, writer Mark Shea explored this mystery and gave his opinion in today’s image.
I’m sure he was plain in appearance based on the description in the book of Isaiah.
The prophet didn't describe Jesus’ face—but his form, his presence, his purpose:
“He grew up like a small plant before the Lord, like a root in dry ground. He had no special beauty or form to make us notice Him; nothing in His appearance to make us desire Him.” (Isaiah 53:2 NCV)
“He was hated and rejected by people. He had much pain and suffering. People would not even look at Him. We didn’t even notice Him. But He took our suffering on Himself… and we are healed because of His wounds.” (Isaiah 53:3–5 NCV)
Jesus wasn’t outwardly attractive. He wouldn’t have stood out in a crowd. In fact, He was easy to dismiss—plain, poor, and uncelebrated.
But beneath that humble surface was the most glorious reality the world had ever seen.
He was God in human flesh.
He came to rescue us. He carried the full weight of our sin. He was beaten and crushed for our sake—and didn’t protest.
He was led like a lamb to be slaughtered and kept silent. Why? Because love compelled Him.
Isaiah continues: “He was put to death; He was punished for the sins of my people… The Lord decided to crush Him…but He will still see His descendants and live a long life. My good servant will make many people right with God.” (Isaiah 53:8–11 NCV)
Jesus wasn’t just another man. He was “the man”. The Messiah. The sin-bearer. The suffering Servant.
He didn’t just teach truth—He embodied it. He didn’t just talk about love—He proved it. He didn’t just die—He overcame death.
So here’s the question:
If a man stood before you—ordinary, unremarkable, not wealthy, not impressive—and said, “I can save your soul for eternity,” how would you respond?
Would you laugh? Ignore Him? Or fall at His feet?
Here’s the bottom line:
- He didn’t come to impress. He came to redeem.
- He didn’t come to dominate. He came to serve.
- He didn’t come to be adored for His looks. He came to be known for His love.
And He came for you and me. Who does that? Nobody but Jesus Christ.
LORD, help us to trust fully in Jesus Christ for salvation and eternal life. Thank You for the One who wasn’t beautiful to the world—but is everything beautiful to us. IJNIP amen♥️
