How would you describe a balanced life? I’ll bet the answer is varied. Some might focus on health, or money, or family, or spirituality and the list could keep going.
The other day, I posted a question, “How would you describe Finishing Your Life well?” With no offense, almost no one answered. That really is okay.
But how would you? Life is so busy; family, chores, career, and trying to cram a little fun and relaxation in between.
In my book “You Finishing Well”, I mentioned the two most important things of life. Do you know what they are?
Jesus said it himself; “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and most important command. And the second command is like the first: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ All the law and the writings of the prophets depend on these two commands.” (Matthew 22:37-40 NCV)
So loving God with all and loving others as yourself are the two most important things in life. Jesus said these two principles are in all scripture. That’s quite amazing if you stop and think about it.
As base as that sounds, securing your eternal life is most important because we all die. As our salvation becomes secure, our love begins to grow toward God - and others.
I don’t know about you, but for me, having a deep love for God and others seems to make everything else have more purpose and meaning.
For example, when you work out, the motivation changes because The Holy Spirit resides in our body. The New Testament refers to our body as “the temple”. It’s where we worship in mind, heart and soul.
Another example might be friendships. They take on a new meaning as you choose friends to pray and worship with, and as you have fun together. It’s just better.
Making God and others first in our life, changes everything. It adds depth, meaning, purpose, happiness and joy. Yes, it can bring heartache too, however even that has a new meaning as we move forward in life.
As we pile up personal agendas on one side of the life scale, it becomes balanced as we prioritize God and the love for others on the other side.
There’s nothing like it.
So if you are missing something in your life that you just can’t define, it may be the love for God and the love for others. Maybe it’s time to evaluate our deep motives of life and how and what we love.
LORD, help us enjoy life, however let our love for you and others be found in our foundation of life. As we build upon this incredible foundation, please bless us in our love for you and others. Help us do it well and finish well in this area of our life. IJNIP amen ♥️
