How is your financial life going? Are you on track to be comfortable financially for your senior years?
Actually, retirement is not Biblical.
The rich “do” rule over the poor somewhat. King Solomon, who was the most wealthy ever said “The rich rule over the poor, and borrowers are servants to lenders.” (Proverbs 22:7 NCV)
The wealthier rule over you. If you have a lot of stuff, but owe payments on it, not to be negative, but you actually don’t really own your stuff.
Too many people work too hard, and too long to have so many things that we don’t need. Solomon said “I realized the reason people work hard and try to succeed: They are jealous of each other. This, too, is useless, like chasing the wind.” (Ecclesiastes 4:4 NCV)
I think the issue to debt isn’t making the payments, it’s the time required to earn all that money to pay for all that stuff. That’s the enslavement. Then you have to insure it, clean it, maintain it and store it and one day dispose of it.
We are also indebted to God for our sin. We must pay the penalty for our sin - unless - we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior. Through Christ’s life, death and resurrection, he paid for our past, present and future sin. We become debt-free.
And the payment is free. All you and I have to do is believe it, accept it, confess our sins, repent of our sinful ways and seek the forgiveness that God provides at no cost.
God desires us to be debt free in all sorts of ways.
I remember my Mom, she lived simple. She had no computer or cell phone, yet lived a stress free life. She had no debt, lived on $1180 per month and even saved money. She would say, it didn’t matter the cost of gas, groceries or inflation, she owed no one. It’s a smart way to live. She was happy with her yard, sitting on her porches, enjoying her garden and being involved in her local social and church circles. It was a good life.
I believe that God will bless you and provide contentment as you learn how to be content. I remember the Apostle Paul said:
“For I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:11-13 NIV)
The key is “learning” to be content. It’s a decision.
The question is, could you be happy with less? I will tell you as a cancer patient, take away your health, and all the money in the world wouldn’t be enough to buy yourself a good day.
LORD, help us get our finances and work hours under control. Help us find a career that is not depleting our life. Help the bosses and business owners out there to respect the workers and to respect their lives. Give us more time to spend with you and give us the desire to love you more than the so-called good life. IJNIP amen ♥️
