What do you believe about the resurrection of those who die?
Where are they resurrected from? What type of bodies, if any will the resurrected have? Have you ever studied the resurrection? When will it occur?
When we die, do we go directly to heaven or sleep? What is Hades and Sheol? Is there marriage in heaven?
It’s impossible to cover all the details in a post like this, however the Bible has many answers to these questions.
Concerning our life after death, It’s wise to vet the details and make decisions before we die.
Jesus himself said “A time is coming when all who are dead and in their graves will hear his voice. Then they will come out of their graves. Those who did good will rise and have life forever, but those who did evil will rise to be judged guilty.” (John 5:28-29 NCV)
So where are the graves of the dead that Christ mentions?
Concerning our bodies after death, The Apostle Paul asked the Corinthians:
“What kind of body will they have?” There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies. But the beauty of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the beauty of the earthly bodies is another.” (1 Corinthians 15:35, 40 NCV)
When Christ was resurrected, he had a new body. Prior to his death Isaiah the prophet said he was beaten beyond recognition of a human (Isaiah 52:14) - but it did not look that way after his resurrection.
If we are already in heaven, how can we be resurrected? King David mentioned Sheol; “If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!” (Psalm 139:8 ESV)
Is Sheol a good and bad place?
The story Christ once told of a non-believer begging to warn his brothers of his tormenting place, contrasted to a place of comfort (the arms of Abraham). What is this place?
“Later, Lazarus ( a believer) died, and the angels carried him to the arms of Abraham. The rich man (not a believer) died, too, and was buried. In the place of the dead, he was in much pain. The rich man saw Abraham far away with Lazarus at his side.” (Luke 16:22-23 NCV)
Here’s a quick conclusion:
Sleep after death is most probable based on biblical references. Believers are resurrected into comfort, as well as non-believers into a place of torment.
When Christ returns, the believing and non-believing are judged. John’s vision in Revelation wrote:
“And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne. Then books were opened, and the book of life was opened. The dead were judged by what they had done, which was written in the books.” (Revelation 20:12 NCV)
Our bodies die, yet we don’t. It’s a topic worth vetting since the death rate is 100%.
The deeper the due-diligence, hopefully the greater the peace as we all approach the transition of death to everlasting life.
LORD, you give us enough information about death and the after-life. Please help us to understand our own death and our life after death. IJNIP amen ♥️
